Celebrate the arrival of fall by taking part in traditional Hungarian harvest festivities at Scandinavia House in NYC on Saturday, October 4, from 3:00 to 6:00pm. Hosted by the Tulipán Foundation, this fun-filled afternoon invites guests of all ages to explore the sights, sounds, and flavors of one of Hungary’s most cherished seasons.
In Hungarian folk culture, the harvest was a communal effort, completed only through the shared strength of many. After all crops were gathered, the hard work gave way to celebration with singing, dancing, and feasting. At our harvest festival, guests will experience this excitement firsthand, guided by award-winning artisans and folk artists through hands-on crafts, games, and interactive winemaking activities.
The afternoon will feature a lively parade led by Fényes Banda, a traditional Hungarian folk music band and a display of woven baskets created primarily by Tulipán grantee Márta Legeza. Guests can also watch craft demonstrations in woodcarving and leatherwork by students from the Nádudvar Folk Handicrafts Vocational High School, offering an intimate glimpse into techniques that continue to thrive today. All are invited to take part in the “Grape Guard” game and discover traditional dances.
The highlight of the day will be an interactive winemaking experience, where guests can crush grapes by hand and explore traditional winemaking techniques. Adults are welcome to participate in a wine tasting curated by Palinkerie and led by wine expert and ethnographer László Mód, featuring award-winning selections from Benedek Winery and Tibor Gál. Traditional treats, such as pogácsa, strudel, corn flatbread, and sweet grape-and-cheese bites, will round out the experience, ensuring all guests get a chance to indulge in the flavors of fall.
Whether you’re looking to connect with Hungarian heritage or simply enjoy a festive afternoon with your family, this harvest celebration offers something for everyone. Registration is now open, and space is limited for this one-of-a-kind event. Click here to reserve your spot today.
