Julien Chang is an emerging composer and performer whose work explores the intersection of musical tradition, philosophy, and cultural history. His practice spans concert music, recording, and research, with a particular focus on Hungarian musical heritage and its transnational influence. He earned a B.A. from Princeton University and has been studying composition at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest since 2024.
As the recipient of the 2025 Tulipán Art & Culture Award, Julien will develop Resonant Diaspora: A Transatlantic Folk-Modern Composition Initiative, a two-year project creating new music inspired by Hungarian folk traditions. He will compose four original works (including two chamber and two electro-acoustic) that reimagine melodies, rhythms, and aesthetics of traditional Hungarian folk music through his contemporary compositional voice.
With this support, Julien will complete the compositions, explore historical and regional folk sources, and present the new works in performance. Through this initiative, he continues to illuminate the evolving dialogue between Hungarian musical heritage and contemporary artistic practice.
